I decided to do an experiment on Twitter regarding its filters and privacy. I am already a twitter user but decided to create a new account. I started fresh and through the sign up process decided to follow specific accounts. The Genres of accounts were Lifestyle & culture, Beauty, travel, food, photography, YouTube, and “ha-ha fun.”
After this Twitter provided me with a list of people to follow that fit my interests I just ticked off. After requesting to follow all 87 suggestions, I then noticed that they had new recommendations for me based on my location. Immediately they suggested I follow accounts like Cp24, Toronto Blue jays, José Bautista, University of Waterloo, and more mainstream accounts that are Toronto related. After I clicked some of the mainstream accounts I noticed that I began receiving NBA team account suggestions to follow. When I began my process of picking my interests I never clicked on anything sports related so this came as a shock to me. It then dawned on me that the day prior I had been Google searching a basketball teams score and came to the conclusion that this was why I received these suggestions. I then decided to start searching and browsing on Twitter. I typed in Donald Trump and started exploring his profile. Then I went on to search the former President Barack Obama. After this I liked some of his tweets as well retweeted them and gave him a follow. When I returned to my home page I had a brand new list of suggested followers. The new list was of course Donald Trump, Michelle Obama, FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States) and POTUS (President of the United States) profiles as well as CNN, and other politic type accounts. It took no time for the filters to begin altering my new Twitter feed to best “suit my needs and interests.” Beware of how consumed we can get by Social medias "convenience." - Danielle
